Think It’s Too Late For You? Artist Betty Franks Proves Otherwise

Seven years ago, I had a profound encounter with a fellow artist that would forever change the way I saw my own art career.

This artist had a sizable following and was fairly well known, and I had been a fan of hers for some time. So, when she reposted a piece of my art online and gave me a shoutout, you can imagine I was pretty stunned — and really freakin’ happy. 

What I felt wasn’t just excitement over new followers, though. It was because I finally felt seen, respected, and less alone in my experience as an artist. 

At the time, that artist didn’t know it, but that one little act of kindness empowered me to keep going at a time when I felt stranded. It made a big impact on my career, too.

Who was this magical human, you ask? The inimitable Betty Franks. 

Meet Betty Franks

Betty Franks is not only a talented artist, but a gracious and kind soul. Born in Toronto, Canada, and raised in San Jose, California, Betty didn’t even start painting until she was 50. She had a long and successful career in customer service management, but over time realized how much she needed a creative outlet.

That creative outlet is now her career, and through her work, online courses, and workshops, her story empowers many artists (including myself!) to believe that it’s never too late to start. 

This was the biggest theme in our conversation, but we also talked about:

• How to put yourself out there despite being nervous
• Dealing with naysayers and stepping into confidence (in yourself, and your art)
• How to balance the business and the creative
• Discovering your style (and why it’s a marathon…not a race)
