If you are an artist waiting to feel ready before you invest in yourself, Jodie King has something direct to say to you this week: ready was never the thing standing between you and your decision. It never was, and it never will be.
This episode isn’t really about Studio Elite, even though Jodie uses it as the example. It’s about every decision an artist puts off because the feeling of certainty hasn’t shown up yet. A gym membership. A plane ticket. A program you already believe, in your gut, is the next right move. Jodie’s argument is simple and uncomfortable: that feeling of “almost ready” isn’t a countdown to a feeling. It’s a decision sitting there, waiting for you to make it without proof.
In 2019, Jodie joined a program that cost her $20,000, money she genuinely needed at the time. She was not ready. She was terrified. She had zero evidence it would work. What she did have was belief, and a willingness to work for the outcome before the outcome existed. That decision turned into $250,000 in revenue that year. Jodie is careful to name why: not magic, but the fact that she decided first and built the proof second.
Jodie breaks down what she calls the fear stack, the layered set of fears artists carry into any big decision: the money fear, the “who am I to do this” fear (which she notes shows up disproportionately in women who are conditioned to check with everyone else first), the fear of failing in public, and the fear of disappointing the people closest to you. None of these fears are disqualifying on their own. What matters is naming them, because an unnamed fear runs the show from the shadows. A named fear is something you can actually look at and decide from.
This mindset work is the same territory Jodie explores in Episode 31: Artist’s Money Mindset and in Episode 87: How Imposter Syndrome Is Holding You Back as an Artist, both worth a revisit if this one hits home.
The cost of staying on the fence rarely feels like a cost in the moment. It feels like caution. But Jodie is clear that not deciding is still a decision, just the quiet, cautious version of one. The real cost shows up later, as another year, or five, or more, spent sitting on the same fence.
Jodie shares the story of Studio Elite alum Jodie Gear, who applied the night before the deadline with shaking hands and no proof it would work. Today, Gear has built an entire home furnishings line, House of Gear, out of that decision. You can hear more of her story in Episode 76: The Life-Changing Effects of an Artist Committing and Episode 138: How to Make Your Art Career Dreams a Reality, both featuring Jodie Gear directly.
Jodie ties the episode back to the Rebel Trifecta, her framework for a sustainable art career: the art itself, the business skills, and the mindset required to sustain both. You don’t need all three fixed before you make a big decision. That’s what Studio Elite is actually for. But naming which of the three you’re avoiding is often the first honest step.
Jodie closes with a reminder that no one is going to hand you permission. You have to give it to yourself. Studio Elite’s fall cohort begins September 18th, and applications are open now.
