If you have been posting consistently and still are not selling your art on social media, this episode is for you. Here is something that rarely gets said out loud: an estimated 4 in 10 art purchases are now influenced directly by social media, and that number keeps climbing. So if the sales still are not coming, even though people are commenting, liking, and following along, the problem usually is not talent. There are four very specific, very fixable things missing from the post itself.
Most artists have been taught that an engaged following is the whole goal. Get the likes, get the comments, and the sales will eventually follow. Jodie pushes back hard on that idea in this episode. An engaged audience and a buying audience are not necessarily the same thing, and a lot of the people liking your work might be other artists, not collectors. That is not a problem. Jodie has sold plenty of art to artists over the years, and artists often appreciate the work more than anyone. But if growing your following has not translated into growing your sales, Episode 51: Why Your Art Social Media Account Isn’t Growing is worth a listen alongside this one, since the two problems are related but not identical.
Here is the pattern Jodie has watched for years, both in the artists she mentors and just scrolling her own feed. Technically strong work, posted consistently, that still is not moving anyone toward buying. Four things are usually missing. There is no story connecting the piece to an emotional feeling. There is no price. There is no size, so a buyer scrolling on their phone has no idea if that piece will fit their wall. And there is no clear, plain statement that the piece is even available. Episode 06: How to Use Social Media to Sell Your Art covers the foundational version of this, and Episode 126: From Scrolls to Sales: Attracting Real Art Collectors on Instagram goes deeper on turning followers into collectors specifically on Instagram.
At the five hundred to five thousand dollar price point, almost nobody buys on impulse from a single post. Familiarity matters more than any one post going viral. Repeated, consistent exposure lowers the psychological barrier for a collector to say yes, and it builds what Jodie calls parasocial trust, the sense that an artist is legit and worth investing in. This is also why she recommends marking a piece “sold” publicly once it sells. It is not bragging. It is social proof that tells a potential collector this is real, and other people want what you are making.
Jodie illustrates this with a painting she sold called Finding the Way. She did not write about the brushes, the layers, or the technique. She wrote about what the piece meant for her, what she was moving through as she painted it. That is the difference between a making story, the how, and a becoming story, the why. A piece of art with a story has more perceived value than a piece of art with no context, and it is only the becoming story that gives someone else a doorway to actually relate to the work. If putting your own story into words feels harder than the painting itself, Episode 105: How to Craft an Artist Statement That Drives Sales is built exactly for that moment.
This is the one most artists resist the hardest. But the data backs up something Jodie has believed for years: the vast majority of buyers say price transparency is a key factor in whether they buy at all, and that number keeps climbing. Affordability actually ranks dead last among the reasons people hesitate to buy art. What ranks much higher is trust and uncertainty, and hiding your price only adds more of both. Episode 14: How to Price Your Art (So It Sells!) is the deep dive if pricing is the piece you have been avoiding.
The fourth thing is simply telling people, in the post itself, that the work is for sale and how to buy it. Do not assume it is obvious from your bio. Say it in the caption, every time. Story, price, size, and a plain yes, this is for sale. That is what actually moves someone from admiring your work to collecting it.
If this episode has you realizing you are leaving money on the table one conversation at a time, that is exactly the gap Studio Elite exists to close. Applications for the fall cohort are open now, and the cohort begins September 18th.
