Do You Fear Failing With Your Art? Or Do You Fear Success?

I always have the most enlightening conversations with the folks inside my Studio Elite program.

We usually talk about the hard-hitting stuff, and get to the nitty-gritty. We don’t skirt over the personal either. We cover the full spectrum with art and biz. It’s what the program is for. But our recent conversation left me thinking long and hard about what I feel is an overdue conversation here on the Honest Art Podcast. Because honestly? It can apply to any artist, anywhere, at any time, and in every stage of their career. 

And that’s about fear. 

Whether we have the fear of failure with our art, or the fear of success, it’s a cognitive dissonance all the same. It’s like having your foot on the gas and brake pedal, but going nowhere. 

And it’s the number one thing that keeps us stuck.

Fear of success or failure with your art — why they’re really the same

Fear of success and fear of failing as an artist, when you break them down, are the same thing. You want to be this…but you don’t want to be that. You want to get started on your art journey, but you don’t want to be rejected. You want to sell your work, but you don’t want to start a business. 

It’s all one big mind f*ck.

But whatever camp you find yourself in today, this week’s episode is going to unpack ways you can break down those walls and get to the core issue. How you can push past fear and rejection and start stepping into the work you were created to do. 

We’ll talk about things like:

• Strategies for uncovering what your fear truly is (i.e., not JUST failure or rejection, and not just success)
• How to get clear on what you want
• Exercises you can do to uncover all the above
