My Best Tips for Creating Abstract Art

Even though I’m an abstract artist now, most people are shocked to hear I was a representational artist for most of my art career.

For the longest time, I just “didn’t get it.” (It being abstract art.) I didn’t understand the mystery or intrigue of abstract art. 

But I wanted to so badly! I wanted to be one of those artists who got “it,” because I felt like that would make me a legit artist. If I could only grasp what lay between the bold lines and bright colors of abstract art, I’d know I’d made it.

Thankfully, “it” finally clicked for me. But the lightbulb moment didn’t come from any training, special event, being in the “right room with the right people,” or learning some fancy new technique. 

I just happened upon a painting one day that I LOVED…and I just knew. I just “got it.”

Creating abstract art is about more than technique 

So what is “it”? What makes abstract art great? I would say that it’s the heart behind our art — what we need to communicate through our work, whether that’s grief, pain, triumph, or something else entirely. 

The key to abstract art is doing the inside work before we do the outside work. Abstract art is an inside job, not just using the best tools or learning the best techniques.

How can you, as an artist, tap into the message you’re meant to share and project it onto the canvas? That’s what I’ll be talking about in today’s episode, along with:
