How Great Composition Takes Our Art From Meh to Amazing

You know I’m not one for rules. Nine times out of ten, if you asked for my advice, I’d say “Fuck the rules” — especially when it comes to art. But the truth is, some “rules” exist for a good reason.

Liking making your art better.

Typically, I’d say that artistic “rules” can be pretty stifling. They can keep us from creating our most authentic work. We get so focused on ticking off boxes or making sure everything is perfect that it doesn’t leave us much room to explore what we can add to our work. 

But some rules, like the basics of composition, are actually really helpful.

How the basics of composition can make your art better

Now, I’ll add the caveat that when I say rule here, I really mean more of a guideline or suggestion. You don’t HAVE to follow the rules of composition to make great art. However, if you find yourself struggling to steer the canvas away from fugly, these are good guidelines to lean on. 

That’s why we’re covering composition in this episode — so you can have the guardrails you need when you’re stuck. I dig into a few different elements of composition, and how to apply them to your work, like: 

• What composition consists of (hint: it’s less about colors and values and more about the hows and wheres)
• Why composition matters (it really really does)
• When you should throw out the “no-rules-rule” and lean on the rules of composition
• How NOT to stifle your creativity in the process
