6 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Investing in Your Art Business

Jodie shares the story of her very first art fair, back when she was just getting her legs underneath her as an artist. After a friend with a BFA started rattling off next steps in the car ride home, Jodie found herself in tears, insisting she was not a “real artist” because she had not gone to art school. That moment cracked open a truth she has built her whole career on: imposter syndrome does not go away with a little success. It has to be worked on directly, the same way you would work on a painting technique.

The artists who get traction are not the ones with the least fear. They are the ones with 1% more courage than fear. Fear always shows up first and it always screams the loudest, and the job is not to silence it completely, it is to move anyway.

The Six Questions to Ask Before You Invest

Before you put another dollar into your art business, whether that is Studio Elite, a workshop, a new studio space, or even better paint, Jodie walks through six questions designed to surface both the practical and the mindset side of readiness.

Question 1: Do you have a clear, honest understanding of the quality of your work? Not from people who already love you. Have you had real critiques, exhibitions, or outside feedback?

Question 2: Do you know why you paint and what your work is about? This is the question Jodie says matters most. Artists who can answer it show up differently everywhere, including on social media.

Question 3: Have you outgrown where you are? Readiness can feel like restlessness, like doing the same thing over and over and getting bored with it.

Question 4: Are you prepared to market yourself and your work publicly? This means being willing to show up as the version of yourself that is ready to expand, even when people around you expect the quieter version.

Question 5: Are you ready for the time commitment, even when it is not convenient? Are you willing to carve out real studio and business hours, not just leftover time?

Question 6: Can you create the hours you need without sacrificing the fun of your creativity? After 23 years, Jodie says she still loves getting in the studio, because she protects time for both her creativity and her business.
