I know I’m known for my abstract art, but this episode goes out to all the representational artists out there.
Did you know I actually started with representational art? Yep! My first painting was a vase of flowers, and I still have it.
Now, you’d probably think I’m insanely proud of that piece. That I’m more than willing to show it off, right? It was my first, after all.
But that couldn’t be further from reality. The truth is, it’s boring AF and is totally devoid of my personality, my voice.
Is it a solid painting? Sure! But it doesn’t capture attention and invite onlookers to interact with my art.
That, my friends, is what I see so many representational artists doing. Just painting what they see. Which is holding them back, big time. So let’s look at some of my top tips for how you, a representational artist, can elevate your work.
Stop painting what you see. Simple as that.
Painting just some flowers, chickens, cars, etc. You can paint it exactly as it appears, and make it damn near picture-perfect, but how many times have our eyes seen a symmetrical barn? Or a proportionate bouquet?
Art like that is pretty, but it’s not welcoming or intriguing. And it doesn’t have personality.
To really invite people into the story that is YOUR art, you’ve got to stop playing by the rules. And in this episode, I’m going to show you how, including:
Until next time, y’all!

Hi Jodie. I think you have such a lovely way about you and how you explain everything. I thank you. I live in a seaside village in NSW, Australia. I have been painting in watercolours for a long time, now large canvases using acrylic. I have lost my Mojo for now. I haven’t painted for over 6 months. I will take what you have said on board and get that Mojo back. It is a busy life we lead and things get in the way. I have my social pages running but have also lost in that too. I have listened to a lot of your talks and I am a bit excited to get started soon. Thanks so much for helping and inspiring others.
