The Power of Negative Space in Your Art

Early on in my art career, I went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out how to elevate my art…but I wasn’t getting it. Did I need to add MORE? Did I need less? Did my art need to be something other than what I desired to express from my soul?

What was the secret that the greats undoubtedly knew that I just wasn’t in on? What was I missing?  

Turns out, it wasn’t any of that. What my art was missing? Negative space. 

Negative Space is not a Dirty Word

Negative space is not a dirty word — when talking about art and composition, it can actually be a source of life. Some people call it background space, void space, or even white space. But really, it’s just the empty space around an object (or objects)…but it is anything but empty. 

In this episode, I’ll show you why negative space is so important, including: 

• How negative space helps create focus
• How it helps to create depth and adds complexity to the overall composition
• And how to practice seeing and using negative space in your own art

When in doubt? Just remember that negative space can be the most POSITIVE step you can take in leveling up your art.
