How to Become Your Future Self 

For years, I held on tightly to a vision of who I wanted my future self to be. 

That vision, of course, included a successful career as an artist. My life would be filled with regular income, ongoing conversations with collectors, my own solo shows, and my art hung in beautiful places (not just in the homes of my best friends or sister).

I truly believed that, once I had all the things I wanted, I would finally feel happy. 

The problem? Thinking that these goals, things, or events will make us happy becomes an elusive pursuit. A never-ending chase for something that’s always just slightly out of reach. 

Of course, wanting to accomplish something isn’t inherently bad. But to get there, we have to first be there. (WTF does that mean??) 

In essence, we need to know how to become our future selves to find the satisfaction we so desperately crave as artists. Read on to see what I mean…

Becoming your future self as an artist

In this episode of the Honest Art Podcast, I’m rejecting the notion that to be happy as artists, we must first “have.” To be a happy, successful artist, it feels like you have to have the art shows, the collectors, the prestige. But that’s not the case.

Instead, I’m challenging you to instead “be, do, then have.” Be the person you want to be first, then do the necessary things to get there.

If this sounds like a bit of a nebulous concept, that’s simply because this is a TOTALLY different way of thinking for us artists. I dig into this exercise in this episode, as well as dive into: 

• Challenging your goals (why have you set them?)
• Figuring out WHO you need to be to attain those goals
• Knowing what action is needed to get there
• Faking it until you make it

This is one of the BEST tools I’ve found to change my trajectory as an artist and to finally feel happy with where I’m at in this moment. I want that for y’all, too, so don’t miss this episode.
