How Music Impacts Creativity

If you know me, you know that I am a lover of music. I still blast Prince songs and belt out the lyrics in my car like I’m a teenager. Music is constantly playing in the background of my workshops — including our meditation sessions. 

I play music by the pool, when I’m hanging out with friends, and even before I fall asleep. Music feeds my soul.

And so yes, I play it when I make art, too. But not always. 

I know that scientifically speaking, music CAN impact creativity. However, as an artist, I also know how it can distract me from creating my very best work. And it might be doing the same thing for you. 

Can we make better, more honest art with music?

Can music be hurtful to the creative process? Given what I’ve just said, you might think I’m going to say yes. But…actually, no. Unless you’re using it in a very specific way. 

I think music can be an amazing tool that helps us create honest art, but not if we’re using it to bypass our feelings — the feelings that make that honest art. What I’m not a fan of is using music to force ourselves into happier, more creative, moods. We can’t cheat ourselves. That only leads to vanilla (aka boring) art.
