Art Critiques: It’s More Than Just Being Told You Suck

There isn’t a single creative person on the planet who is 100% comfortable with getting feedback on their work. Hearing what other people think about the heart and soul you’ve poured into your art is anxiety-provoking, to say the least. 

But feedback is what helps us grow. And if we only ever got positive feedback, we wouldn’t be able to do that. 

Early on in my art career, I received mostly positive critiques from family and friends. But it wasn’t until I showed my work to a gallerist for the first time ever that I saw just how important “negative” critiques are. 

Why positive art critiques aren’t always a good thing

As you can imagine, I was so nervous about showing this gallerist my work. I brought three of my favorite pieces to her…and was absolutely embarrassed when I saw no signs of being impressed. 

Then she said, “I can see that you’ve got potential, but there’s nothing special about your art. I see this type of work all the time from new artists.”

OUCH! But it was what I needed to hear. And ultimately, it ended up being one of the things to push me to make art I needed to make, rather than what I thought others would love. 

We need to be encouraged and supported but also hear what will help us grow. So in today’s episode, I’m going to talk about:

• How we can learn to embrace seemingly “negative” feedback
• How to hold onto positive feedback
• And why you should hold neither in too high of regard
