As artists, it’s very easy for us to get attached to our work. I mean, how can we not? We pour countless hours, money from supplies, our creative energy, and most importantly, our hearts and souls, into what we make. 

But when I sat down with this week’s guest, Keren Toledano, she said something that stuck out significantly, something she learned a long time ago (though doesn’t know where the quote exactly came from)… “Don’t marry your darlings.”

And she’s right! You can’t get too attached to your work — because it will evolve and change over time. Your work is not your identity. Once you understand that, then you can begin to experience the much-needed freedom and flexibility to be an artist!

Meet Keren Toledano

Keren, like myself, is a self-taught abstract artist and writer (though she’s more like an author — she has published work in numerous magazines and journals!). Starting out her career writing short stories, she stumbled upon a hefty case of writer’s block. And as she turned to art to help her cope…the rest is history!

But Keren’s successful career as an author taught her that you can’t hold your work too closely. There are just some things you have to let go of as an artist (or really, as a creative) if you want the work to be honest. 

That’s what we dig into in this episode. We talk all about:

• How your style as an artist evolves as you do
• Why your work is not your identity (I.E. it’s okay if it changes!)
• Getting vulnerable and selling your work
