People are absolutely floored when I tell them that I spend more time on the business side of my art biz than on the art. When I say I have an art business, or that I’m a professional artist, they usually just picture me in a studio, slinging paint and having artful paint splotches all over my face and hair.

Sometimes, sure. I think I look good covered in paint 😉 But that’s still a small part of what I do. 

When you’re running an art business, there is so much more that you need to make it successful…ya know, other than having amazing art. 

I’ve owned a few different businesses in my lifetime, and in each one, I had to do a lot of things that didn’t really feel like “my job.”

Like when I owned a wine bar. Did I get to try amazing wine? And meet some amazing people? Yes! But I also still had to clean the bathrooms, receive early morning deliveries after closing late at night, and do my taxes. 

There is a not-so-sexy side to owning an art biz — so let’s talk about it.

What it really takes to run an art business

Honestly, as a business owner, you’re going to do a lot more than just make art. But life is so much easier when we manage our expectations. So in today’s episode, I want to talk about:
