You know the part of an art career that nobody posts about on Instagram?
The part where you are deep in the messy middle, doing the work, doubting the work, building the thing, questioning the thing, and trying to remember why you started in the first place. That’s what this episode is. Not a highlight reel. A real conversation.
I brought back my friend, Jodie Gear, to talk about what it takes to turn a creative calling into a real-life art career. Not someday. Now.Jodie did not take the classic ‘art school, gallery, fancy bio’ route. She had a corporate career, a creative brain that never stopped, and a deep knowing that she was meant to build a life that felt like hers. Then she made the scariest decision. She chose the path before it felt safe. Before it felt tidy. Before she had all the answers. And what she’s building now is mind-blowing.
House of Gear is a multi-purpose creative space on the Mornington Peninsula in Australia. It’s part studio, part gallery, part workshop retreat space, part homewares sanctuary, part community heartbeat. Everything begins with her art, then becomes fabric libraries, bespoke interiors, cushions, headboards, and one-of-a-kind pieces made by actual human hands. And yes, she’s had the stuff-hits-the-fan moments. Floods in the factory. Things breaking. Extreme heart. The constant juggling of a new venture built from scratch.
But she’s still standing because she’s anchored in purpose and she’s committed to staying in flow.
One of my favorite parts of this conversation is how honest Jodie is about the identity shift. She had to learn to call herself an artist, then learn to back that up with action.
Studio Elite helped her unlock something huge: belief in herself. Not the kind of belief that shows up once and stays forever. The kind you practice daily, especially when you feel like an imposter.

We also talk about how to keep your creativity alive when business tasks start eating your brain. Her answer is simple and powerful: create without outcome sometimes. Create for you. Even if it’s small. Even if it’s messy. Even if it turns into “the fuglies”. And then my favorite mic-drop moment:
Everything she’s doing is outside her comfort zone. And that’s exactly why it’s working.
