From Streets to Studio: How David Dominguez Turned His Art into a New Life

Ever doubt that art can change a life? Buckle up, friend. David Dominguez’s story is going to hit you in the heart.

David Dominguez is an Austin-based artist who used to describe his lifestyle as a “hobo by choice”. He spent decades traveling the world, living outside, and finding beauty in chaos. But one simple ballpoint pen sketch flipped his entire story. 

That one piece sold at a local show at Art From the Streets, and suddenly, David saw that art wasn’t just a hobby but his path home. 

How One Drawing Changed Everything for David Dominguez

In this conversation, David and I talk about his journey from graffiti-filled trains in New York to teaching and mentoring at Art From the Streets, a nonprofit empowering unhoused artists to create, exhibit, and sell their work. 

We dig into fear, rejection, and the courage it takes to show your art to the world … even when your inner critic’s screaming, “You’re not good enough”.
