What Art Galleries Are Really Looking For in Emerging Artists

Every emerging artist dreams of having their art hanging in a gallery. But that feeling of “making it” isn’t always a linear path. And it’s not always the same journey for everyone. One artist could have decent work and get representation in 3 months. The other could have incredible work, but keeps getting rejected.

Why? What are these galleries looking for? Is it just luck? Connections? A secret handshake?

I learned the answer the hard way, applying to galleries before my work (or my mindset) was quite ready. But over the years, talking to gallery owners, consultants, and folks on the inside, the mystery started to clear up. And let me tell you, while your incredible art is always the most important thing, there are definitely some key things galleries look for that go beyond just the art itself. 

Tips for Emerging Artists: What Galleries are Looking For

So, what exactly makes a gallery look at your work and say, “Hell yes!” instead of “Meh”? It comes down to a few crucial things that show them you’re serious, professional, and ready to partner in selling art.

That’s why in this episode, we’re getting into: 

• How to stop positioning yourself as a hobbyist and start showing up professionally
• Why now, more than ever, it’s important to articulate your story/voice through your art
• How to become visible and land gallery representation
