Here’s some shocking news for you — I actually didn’t go to art school. And I didn’t even know I liked painting until I was 35.
Yeah, probably not what you were expecting from an art biz owner, but the truth is, I was the kid who was into dance…Not the pole kind (c’mon y’all!)
I’m talking about ballet, tap, jazz, etc. I loved being in the studio and moving my body. It was extremely therapeutic, but I’m not really sure I ever saw it as “artsy.” Little did I know that I would one day take what I loved about dance and utilize it in abstract art.
Who would have thought?? Certainly not 17-year-old Jodie, that’s for sure.
So how did I grow a multi-six-figure art business where I sell my work and teach other artists how to do the same?
Before I became an artist (and after I was a dancer…my body definitely couldn’t move like that anymore after 25, so alas, my dancing career was over), I ran a restaurant, owned a wine bar, had an organic clothing company, and did interior design.
So how the hell did I get into art? Well, that’s what this episode covers!
But it’s not just all about me — I’m sharing my story and how I got into the world of abstract art and entrepreneurship to help you know if it’s time for you, too, to make that jump and just do the damn thing already (it probably is, but just listen to the podcast first to be sure, okay?).
In this episode, we discuss:
This honestly just goes to show you that it’s never too late to start showing up to do the work that YOU love — and there’s no timeline on art either. OR RULES.
That means if you want to be an artist, go for it. Go get your ass in the chair and get something started. You got this.

OMG you are speaking directly to me … I’ll be 61 in a few weeks and the age question has been (too much) on my mind for too long. I am an artist and – damn – I love to paint and to play in my studio. This Spring I’ll have my first exhibition and I’m really exited about it. Yahhh!!!
Looking forward to the next episode 🙂
Hi Mai-Britt! I hope you had the BEST art show! Thank you for listening… we are NEVER too old!!
Jodie, I appreciate your candor and your approach not only to art but to life in general. The fact that you swear and drop a few F-bombs makes you real. I can identify with having artist syndrome. I found it difficult to call myself an artist but have since conquered that inferiority tic. Thanks for creating this podcast. I look forward to more of your tips and encouragement.
I started painting at 60. It’s never too late!
Heck yah!! You’re exactly right! It’s NEVER too late!
