The first time someone asked to pay me for my art, I threw out a random number. It was the first one that popped into my head. It had no rhyme or reason, other than it was a number that just sounded good — and also one that felt safe.
“$900!” I said enthusiastically. And it was sold. There’s not really much else to say. No drama. No confusion. No discussion. Just a nice chunk of change I wasn’t expecting to get that day.
Was that a good number for that piece? I don’t know, I didn’t think about it much! But the transaction happened so fast that immediately doubt crept in — did I overcharge her? What if I didn’t give a huge enough price for my work? Did I do this the right way? This would be the inner dialogue for a large part of my early days as an artist.
Thankfully, over time I learned better pricing strategies that kept me in that loop for the rest of my career. And today, I want to share those strategies with you, so you can start pricing your art so it freakin’ sells out (and shuts up that doubtful inner dialogue).
Pricing is one of those things that make creatives squirm a little (it is a business term after all!). It’s not comfortable to talk about, so we don’t, and then what ends up happening is, most of the time, we WAY undersell ourselves. Which is a total bummer for so many reasons.
But in this episode of the Honest Art Podcast, we’re going to talk about…
…so you don’t have to feel that way again! Grab a pen and notebook — you’re going to want to write this down (and P.S. there is some math involved, but don’t worry, not too much! We are talking art here.).
Until next time, y’all!

Jodie,
Thank you so much for your candidness.
I’m just beginning my art career, and if I could just make art, I’d be in heaven. I have a website but haven’t sold anything yet. I probably put the cart before the horse there, but oh well.
Actually, someone was interested in a print of a painting I did (which I absolutely loved) and I told them I’d get back to them bc I knew you had this episode. I’ve decided to sell the 20 x 20″ print for $75. I feel comfortable with that price, (which you said is key), and just wanted to thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and giving me confidence. Blessings!!
That is FANTASTIC, Patty! Congrats on the sale and finding that sweet spot of worth and comfortability with your price. Keep it up!
