How Your Mindset Impacts Art Pricing: One-On-One Coaching with Jennifer Cupp

We’re doing something new on the Honest Art® Podcast, I’m sharing a real one-on-one coaching session with an artist from the Honest Art ® Society. 

These are the conversations artists usually have privately, but Jennifer Cupp bravely brought hers into the light so other artists can learn from it, too.

Jennifer started painting at 40. She built a daily practice (4 to 6 am most mornings). She put in eight years of consistency and patience, even when it felt like nobody was paying attention. 

Then she did something that changed everything: she got her art in front of people at art fairs.

And suddenly it went from famine to feast.

She painted 14 pieces in January and sold 11 already.

So we get into the real question that shows up when sales start coming in:

How do you price your work when you are afraid success will disappear?

The Art Pricing Truth Most Artists Need to Hear

Jennifer’s biggest struggle wasn’t “how do I sell”. It was “how do I charge what I’m worth now that people are finally buying?”

She worried about pricing differently for different markets (rural vs big city Chicago). She feared raising prices would shut down sales and throw her back into years of crickets.

Here’s the mindset shift we worked on together:

Pricing is an internal decision, not an external circumstance.

Your work doesn’t magically become better in Chicago and worse in a small town. The quality of your work is the quality of your work. Full stop. 

This is where the identity shift comes in. If you’re still mentally pricing like a hobbyist, you will keep treating your art like “monopoly money”. But when you step into “I’m a professional artist”, you price like one.
