If there’s one thing I know for sure after 20+ years as an artist, it’s that there are no dumb questions. Just a lot of artists pretending they’ve got it all figured out. Spoiler: none of us do.
That’s why every so often, I sit down with a big ol’ list of your questions and answer them honestly … no fluff, no art-school jargon, just straight talk about what actually works.
This week, we’re diving into everything from what galleries want to see on the back of your paintings to how to tell when you’ve officially overworked a piece.
First things first: galleries care most about what’s on the front of your painting. But if you’re wondering what else to include, here’s my take:
And no, I don’t buy the “don’t date your work” argument. Your art isn’t milk. It doesn’t expire. The date tells the story of your evolution, and collectors love that.
I get asked about my energy as skin almost as much as my art. So, yes, I shared my love for Do Not Age supplements. I’m not a doctor, but I share my personal go-tos: SIRT6, berberine, creatine, NMN, and TMG. If you want to try them, use my code SMOKESHOW for 10% off at donotage.org
Let me be real: I absolutely do not build or gesso my canvases anymore. I used to, but these days, I buy them pre-stretched and pre-gessoed. Time is money, and I’d rather spend mine painting than sanding frames in the garage.
If you love doing it, go for it. But if it’s stealing your studio joy, skip it. I sure do.
Nope! If you create, you belong. Whether you’re a painter, mixed media artist, or sculptor, the Honest Art® Society is for anyone who wants to grow in art, business and mindset … with a little laughter and a lot of truth along the way.
YES. YES. YES.
If you don’t have a website yet (and even if you do), you should be including your prices in your posts. Collectors won’t DM you for pricing. They’ll just assume they can’t afford it.
If you want a quick website alternative, check out Artwork Archive. It keeps your art organized and even acts as a mini-website. (If you’re checking it out, use my link for 20% off your first year!)
And whatever you do, make sure your prices are consistent across the board … same on your website, social media, and in galleries.
You don’t need to post every day, but you do need to post with purpose. I follow the 3 P’s:
People buy art, but they connect to the artists. Aim to post a painting at least once a week and mix in your process and personality.
If your piece is 48” or larger on any side, you’ve got two options:
Both work … just depends on your buyer and budget.
This one hits home.
The difference between being in the flow and overworking your painting is subtle but real. If you’re asking, “Am I overworking this?” … you already are.
Step back. Take a break. Go get a snack or a margarita. When you return, you’ll see your work with fresh eyes.
That little pause can save a masterpiece.
At the end of the day, these Q&A episodes remind me why I love this community … We’re all learning, fumbling, and figuring it out together.
So keep asking questions, keep experimenting, and keep showing up for your art.
Until next time, y’all!
