How Art Helped Me Find My Voice: My Personal Journey

The phrase “Honest Art” is something that I have used for years. In fact, what started out as a hashtag (that now has been used over 17k+ times!) is now a motto for my art biz. 

But as I was planning out the 2024 episodes of the Honest Art Podcast, I realized that I never really shared why this phrase means so much to me. So in this episode, I’m getting really really honest with you. I’m sharing more about about where this phrase came from and why it’s so important (for me and for you, too). 

Finding my voice as an artist started in freshman English

I thought that the passion for getting my thoughts onto canvas began when I started painting at the age of 35. But really, it started when I was just 14 years old, on my first day of freshman English.

My teacher introduced us to a type of journaling that you may or may not be familiar with: stream-of-consciousness writing. The idea is basically to just go from head to paper, to get those feelings outside of ourselves. 

I loved that exercise. But what I didn’t know is that this type of journaling would turn into the foundation of what I painted nearly 20 years later. I had no idea that it would be the catalyst for me figuring out my voice and using art to heal years of unwanted and forgotten experiences. 

This experience was the foundation of my concepts for “honest art” — and so much of what I teach and mentor today.
