Ever stepped back from your canvas and thought… “What the hell was I thinking?!”

It happens to every artist and, believe it or not, is 100% part of the creative process. Sometimes you just feel like your work is shit, and that’s okay. But when all you want to do is paint or make something cool, it can start to make you question your value and skill as an artist. 

You, my friend, are in the fugly stage. You may have heard it described as the messy middle or the stuck phase. Either way, it’s not a fun place to be in!

The fugly stage is just a part of the creative process

I have been in the fugly place so many times I should own real estate in it! It’s the terrible, no good, very bad side of creativity…or is it? It can actually be a great sign IF you know how to get out of it — meaning you understand the creative process, and that this too shall pass.

• How to decide when it’s time to walk away and take a break
