The Need For Speed: How Speed Painting Can Enhance Your Art

I was knee-deep in paint splatters and creative chaos when my phone buzzed. An art consultant was coming to my studio. In fifteen minutes. 

As I rushed to put aside the wild, energetic canvases I’d been playing with, I couldn’t help but wonder which of the finished pieces the consultant would like. 

When the consultant arrived, something totally unexpected happened. Instead of walking up to those meticulously refined pieces I spent HOURS on, she quickly went to those unfinished pieces I was trying to hide. 

It turns out, those were the ones she was interested in. Not the safe ones. Not the ones I thought said, “Yes, I’m a professional artist!” I was shocked, but it taught me a valuable lesson: sometimes, the pieces we judge as too “wild” or “unfinished” are the most powerful.

How Speed Painting Release Your Inhibitions

After 21 years as a professional artist, I get it—you want that loose, expressive style. But the harder you try to achieve it, the stiffer your paintings become. You’re aiming for an effortless look…but effort is exactly what’s getting in the way.

That’s where speed painting comes in. It allows you to let go of control and have FUN making art. Because when you’re on a deadline, you don’t have time to worry about the “what ifs.”

In this episode, I’ll take a deep dive into speed painting, covering:

• How speed panting helps you bypass the inner critic
• How to prevent your paintings from feeling contrived, allowing for more honest art to shine through
• How letting go builds confidence in your artistic voice
