“Fuck the rules that suppress authenticity.” The first time I heard Nichole Washington, today’s guest, say that  I was like, “YES! Someone gets it!”

Nichole is an amazing artist, and she’s been commissioned by The New Yorker, HBO, the Hudson Yards, and even has a mural up at the Black Girls Code headquarters! Her fiery spirit is why I love her so much, and I know you’ll be inspired by the way she embodies authenticity and empowerment in her art as much as I do.

Her work is known for highlighting female strength, identity, and spirituality — and she’s just so damn inspiring. 

Coming into your own as an artist

When you hear Nichole speak, you might assume she’s always been this bold — but she swears she wasn’t. She grew up shy and suppressed, and like me, didn’t have the best childhood. But she says there wasn’t one defining moment that got her to where she is today — comfortable with speaking up and standing up for what’s right.

Instead, she says it’s been a collection of smaller defining moments that gradually peeled off the layers of what people said she should be. She took the sadness she felt from her childhood and turned it into a rebellion that helped her create the art she makes today. 

Nichole’s best advice? Create work, then make sense of it later. And I couldn’t agree more! The best art comes when artists turn themselves inside out and have the freedom to truly express how they feel — no restraints, no “should do’s” — just pure, honest art!
