Social media has a bad reputation, especially among artists. But I want to challenge that stereotype and ask…”Have you ever thought about how it can benefit you?”
Sure, we all probably spend too much time on our phones (myself included), but social media can actually be a great way to put yourself out there and sell more of your art. And when we’re just talking about Instagram alone, there are nearly 2 billion users and counting, so think about how that can increase your chances of finding someone who wants to buy YOUR work!
The best part? It’s free to use. There’s virtually no cost for simply posting your work. So in my opinion, it’s actually one of the easiest tools at an artist’s disposal.
Can social media be an annoying (and sometimes even dark) place personally? Yes, but you have to start looking at this through the lens of business. You don’t have to try and work your way up to influencer status, that’s not what it’s about.
It’s about putting yourself out there, and in today’s episode of the Honest Art Podcast, I’m going to show you how social media can benefit your art biz and sales.
Some artists dislike social media because it feels salesy to hop on there and ask people to buy your work. But what many people don’t realize is that social media isn’t a catalog — remember those Sears or JCPenney catologs, listing all their products, colors, sizes, options…etc.? Yeah, that’s not what social media is.
Social media is a magazine!
Think about it: Yes, a magazine has ads, but it also has so much more, like human interest stories, interviews, “just for fun” stuff. And it all works together to build a connection with the reader.
This, my friend, is how you should be approaching your social media content.
So in today’s episode, we’re talking about:
And don’t forget to check out Art Biz for Rebels if you’re itching to learn more about this business stuff. This is my signature art business course, and it’s packed with modules and trainings on how to sell to galleries, build a team, create a badass website, and of course, how to stand out on social media.
Until next time, y’all

Loved this Podcast Episode with Ana Stapleton!!!
There was so much useful info for me, especially about contacting the Hospitality groups.
And the final question about having a piece of Art that reflects your soul totally connected with me. Mine is titled “Raw Talent.” A 20” x 24” acrylic painting that touches my heart every time I look at it.
Thank you for such an amazing podcast!
Sandra!! Thank you so much for leaving a comment! Ana is a wealth of knowledge so I’m glad you had some valuable take aways! Thanks for listening!
