In this week’s episode of the Honest Art Podcast, I sat down with my lovely friend and former Art Biz for Rebels student, Becky Joan Springer! She’s an amazing artist but more than that, she’s an amazing person. Her warm demeanor and loving personality are totally transparent in her work — and the philosophy she holds about community is something all of us, as artists, can rally behind.

Becky Joan became an artist after two decades of working in higher education as a counselor for queer and trans students. She was always creative, but never saw her doodles or paintings as anything more than a hobby. In her adult life, though, she found art to be a healing mechanism and safe space. Now, she wants to bring that to others.

Finding community through art

Becky Joan attended one of my art retreats in Italy, and after seeing the way art can connect others in a deeply human way, she wanted to continue that story for others — namely in the LGBTQIA+ community. 

And now, she helps brings everything she loves about art — community, healing, expression, and creative freedom — to others through retreats and workshops of her own.
