Why Your Paintings Look Flat (And How to Create Depth Instead)

You know that moment when you step back from your painting and think …. “Ugh. Why does this look so flat?”

Not awful. Not amazing. Just …. lifeless. 

It’s not your skill level or your creativity. And it’s definitely not because you need more detail.

It’s because your painting is missing DEPTH.

In this episode, I’m walking you through the exact ways you can create depth in your work without overworking it or turning it into a muddy mess. These are the same tools I learned over 22+ years of building a fine art career and getting my work into galleries and collections around the world. 

If your art feels flat, this episode is your wake-up call.

How to Create Depth

Most artists think more detail equals better art, but that’s how you end up frustrated and overworked. 

Depth comes from contrast and intention. From knowing how to guide the viewer’s eye instead of trying to show them everything at once. 

In this episode, I’m going to show you some simple, but powerful ways to create that depth

• Using value shifts to create focus and movement
• Understanding how sharp and soft edges affect space
• Letting saturated colors come forward while muted ones fall back
• Layering shapes to build dimension without overcomplicating 
• Using warm and cool colors to create distance
• And giving your work breathing room with negative space 

This is the stuff that separates “meh” paintings from ones that make people stop and stare.
