What to Track in Your Art Business (And What to Forget About)

If you want to sell more art, this might be the most important episode I’ve ever recorded. Seriously. If you can take notes, do it.

Because most artists only measure one thing: sales.

And sales matter, yes. But sales are a lagging indicator. They’re the harvest, not the planting. They’re the smoke, not the fire. 

So if you only track sales, you’re basically staring at smoke and asking, “Where’s the fire?” while ignoring the matches in your hand. 

In this episode, I’m teaching you the difference between leading indicators and lagging indicators, and exactly what to track so you can create consistent income and stop feeling powerless when sales slow down.

The Art Business Metrics that Move the Needle

Instead of obsessing over sales and follower count, look at the categories of behavior that create results. 

There are five areas worth tracking:

• Creativity (you can’t sell what you don’t create)
• Visibility (stop worshipping follower count)
• Email (warm audience = easier sales)
• Relationships (outreach creates opportunities)
• Mindset (emotional data is business data)

That’s it. Not 47 spreadsheets. Not vanity numbers that mess with your head. Just the core areas that influence whether or not sales happen. 

And if there’s one metric that sits above all of them, it’s this: consistency. 

Did you show up?

Did you create?

Did you invite people in?

Did you nurture relationships?

Did you show up for yourself?

Sales are the harvest. The rest is planting. 

If you’re not planting, you’re not harvesting.
