Why Artists Must Connect to Their Art, Not Just the Process 

Most artists think their process is the story. It’s not. And if you’re hiding behind techniques, layers, and color choices, your art may be missing its soul.

Let’s be real: too many artists hide behind their process.

“I used some bright colors … I layered this medium … I added texture ….”

That’s not the heartbeat of your art. That’s a grocery list.

When you only talk about process, you’re leaving the soul out of the story. And I see this over and over again. Whether it’s in the Honest Art® Society critiques, conversations with artists, or even my own past work. We get stuck polishing, perfecting, and tweaking until the piece looks good on Instagram, but deep down we know something’s missing. 

Spoiler alert: it’s usually us.

How to Bring the Soul Back to Your Work and Connect to Your Art

In this episode, I dig into why this happens and how to flip the script. Social media trains us to create for likes instead of connection. Perfectionism strangles the honesty right out of our work. And when we avoid vulnerability on the canvas, our art feels “good enough” but never truly alive.

But here’s the good news: you don’t have to stay here. You can connect to your art. I share the practices that bring me (and my students) back to the purpose of creating: meditation to quiet the noise, journaling to dump the brain clutter, and messy, childlike play to reignite curiosity. Because honest art doesn’t come from your head. It comes from your gut, your soul, your willingness to be seen.
