You never forget the first time someone wants to give you money for your art. For me, that moment was about 25 years ago, and yes, while most days I can’t even remember my grocery list, I still remember that moment pretty well.
My house was up for a house tour right around the time I started painting (where people literally toured my house, because that’s what people do in Texas). Y’all, there were paintings everywhere, and I was running out of room to put all my supplies and half-done pieces of work.
And because the house couldn’t look like a hot mess while dozens of people were coming in and out, I had the bright idea to hang some of the finished pieces up to make room.
I didn’t think anything of it — until a woman asked me about the artist. You can imagine my surprise when I realized she was talking about me!!! And when I told her, she still wanted to buy the piece she had been eying above my mantel… for nine hundred bucks.
Now, I didn’t know a damn thing about selling my work, let alone handling people being interested in it. But that experience was both exhilarating and scary…and I knew I wanted more of it.
Selling your art is the best feeling — and I want you to experience it too. So, in today’s episode, I’m going to cover how to know if it’s really time to sell your art (the answer is yes) and how to start pricing your work.
When you’re thinking about pricing your art, there’s a lot of pressure because you’re trying to turn something that’s been a hobby into a profession (at least, that’s what happened to me).
You’ve got a tornado of questions turning in your brain — is my work good enough? What if no one wants to buy it? What will people think of me for making this my actual job?
Sounds like a lot of hypotheticals to me. A lot of hypotheticals that could end up turning out BETTER than you imagined.
But hey, I get it. And that fear? It’s what I’m going to cover in this episode.
You’ll walk away with a good ol’ pep talk and some practical strategies to get your ass out of that chair and in front of people who will pay you for your art.
We’ll also talk about:
