I wasn’t the kid who grew up wanting to be an artist. But I was raised in a family of entrepreneurs, so when it was time for me to get out there into the “real world,” all I wanted to do was make a living.
I ended up having several successful businesses — I owned a wine business, restaurants, and even an organic clothing company that was featured in Nordstrom, Whole Earth, and Whole Foods with one of my friends!
Then, at the age of 35, I randomly got an itch to pick up a paintbrush. I had never really been interested in it in my entire life. And you know what? That’s cool because once I started painting, I knew it was exactly where I needed to be.
I’m proud of the fact that I never went to art school — my story as an “accidental artist” is what makes me, me! But truthfully, I’m also thankful I didn’t because the skills I learned as a business owner were not covered in art school anyways (at least, from what I’ve heard).
They don’t teach you the “business of art” in art school so, in this episode, I’m going to talk about what I think every artist should know about building an art biz. Think of this like your crash course on art business-building.
I think one of the things artists miss out on the most in art school is, well, basic business concepts. You know…marketing your business, knowing how to sell your work, things like that. You learn art concepts — like color theory — and spend plenty of time studying other people’s work (rant on that later), but you don’t really learn what you need to know to actually make a living off of your work.
So in this episode, I’m giving it to you straight. We’re talking about:
I am basically breaking down what I wrote for Entrepreneur Magazine, all about the 10 things you won’t learn in art school. Get access to that here — I go even deeper than I do in the article!
If you want to learn more about the business side of owning an art biz (because yes, it IS important!) check out Art Biz for Rebels. I’ll teach you several strategies for establishing yourself as an artist, how to price your art, and apply to galleries, plus tons more!
Until next time, y’all!
