How to Talk About Your Art 

Why is it that talking about our art is the hardest thing for us artists to do? We’re reluctant to give an answer when asked about the why behind our work. We twiddle our thumbs and stare at the ground. We honestly just don’t know what to say because we’ve never thought about the answer. 

The art just comes naturally — how can you put what flows freely from your brush onto the canvas into words? 

But here’s the deal: You need to know how to talk about your art if you want to sell it. 

Sure, if you’re painting for fun (there’s no shame in that!), keep your secrets. However, if you want to get your art noticed by collectors, gallery owners, or consultants, you need to know how to articulate the story behind your work.

Not sure how? No worries — in this episode, I’m going to show you how to talk about your art (yes, even if you’re terrified of doing so). 

The key to talking about your art

Beautiful art sells — but it’s often because of the story behind it. 

I have a friend who is a wine rep, and she always tells me that it’s not the most delicious or expensive wine that sells. It’s the ones with the best story. A story about where it came from, how it’s made, and what makes it special. 

Your art is the same. But if you find yourself having a hard time talking about your art, make sure you tune into this episode. We’ll look at: 

• How to be persuasive and professional when talking about your work
• How to dig into your artist’s story
• How to step inside the mind of a collector so you understand what they’re looking for
