Trust Your Instincts: When to Put the Paintbrush Down

Every artist lives for that high.

You know the one. It’s the moment when you step back from the canvas and nod approvingly to yourself, “Finally, it’s done, and I LOVE it.” A moment when you’ve trusted artistic instincts, and it paid off. 

But just like this moment of triumph, every artist also dreads the moment when they can’t figure out their next step. When everything feels a bit off, disjointed, and just downright fugly.

This is something we ALL experience, myself included. 

But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that you have to know when it’s time to keep going versus when it’s time to just put down the paintbrush and get some space.

It’s time to trust your artistic instincts 

I know how easy it is to be hard yourself — you feel like something’s wrong with you as an artist because you can’t see that next step. You wonder if you have what it takes to keep painting. Or if you’re even really an artist if you can’t crack this rut. All the things. 

But be comforted by the fact that this is all a part of the creative process! You don’t suck, you just need some space.
